Following the Yom Kippur War in October, 1973, the political situation  on the Syria/Israel border remained unstable. Following an initiative by the USA, an Agreement of Disengagement was signed between Israel and Syrian forces. Amongst other things, this agreement provided for a buffer zone and called for a United Nations observer force to supervise its implementation. The agreement was signed on 1974-05-31, on which date the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 350 to set up the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

The buffer zone (aka Area of Separation) is approximately 80km long and separates the Israeli-occupied part of the Golan Heights from the rest of Syria.

UN forces from several nations were involved in UNDOF. Initially, forces were provided by Austria, Canada, Peru and Poland, with later contributions from Croatia, Finland, India, Iran, Philippines, Slovak Republic and currently by Fiji, India, Ireland, Nepal, Netherlands and Philippines.. This article lists the amateur radio activity by members of UNDOF who appended /4U to their callsign.

Operation Gladius - Canadian UNDOF forces in Syria, June 1974 - March 2006

Operation GLADIUS[1] was part of Canada’s participation in UNDOF on the Golan Heights between Israel and Syria. The Canadian contingent was based at Camp Ziouani.

Canada’s involvement with UNDOF began with the launch of Operation DANACA in June 1974, which provided Canadian Forces logistics and signals units to support the entire mission. Originally comprising more than 200 personnel, Operation DANACA was scaled back to 186 in 1992 and 1993, when UNDOF was reduced in size. By March 2006, when Operation DANACA closed, some 12,000 Canadian soldiers, sailors and air personnel had served on the Golan Heights.

In addition, VE1VE/4X4 operated from the Golan Heights in Q4 1975 as a member of UNDOF..

Similarly, VE3BWK/4X was QRV from Golan Heights in 1978.

Finnish UNDOF forces in Syria, March 1979 - October 1993

Finish personnel were redeployed from UNEF II (Sinai, Egypt) in March 1979. to replace the outgoing Iranian battalian, and were in Golan for fourteen years before being withdrawn by the Finnish government in October 1993. The Finnish batallian was known as FINNBATT or FINBATT - both spellings can be seen on the QSL cards..
