Immediately after the end of WWII, British and American members of the Allied Central Mediterranean Forces in the European side of the Mediterranean were issued with temporary callsigns comprising four letters, commencing XA. A few XA stations were qrv from North Africa.

The XA callsigns were soon replaced by 'normal' callsigns. For example, XAFD became MB9AM and XAGA  became SV0AC .

The November 1945 RSGB Bulletin reports that a QSO made by XAZO with XAAA on 1945-10-27 at 1640 GMT was "the first legitimate amateur contact to be made in that theater".

The latest activity that I have come across by an XA call is by XAFQ on 1948-04-30 (tnx SM6JSM-SSA Archivist)..

The XAAA-XAAZ series of calls were mostly issued to US personnel.

The December 1945 RSGB Bulletin reports: "News has been received that these C.M.F stations art to operate on 28 and 56 Mc/s only.

The following Summary by DXCC list is taken from the December 1945 RSGB Bulletin, Fall 1947 and Winter 1947-48 editions of the Radio Amateur Call Book Magazine, and from the Dokufunk page XA - Amateur Radio Allied Forces of 1944-48, from G2MI's "The Month on the Air" column in the RSGB Bulletin, and from documents supplied by G4UZN.
