Before independence, the main prefix for Angola was CR6, with CQ6 and XX6 also used.

XX6 was not used before October, 1971, when numerous stations used XX6 for the entire month, in place of the usual CR6, retaining their usual suffix. XX6 was also used in contests, eg XX6OZ was QRV in CQ WW WPX SSB contest in 1975. In addition XX6 was used for special event stations, eg XX6FL.

Angola gained independence from Portugal on 1975-11-11.

The prefix for independent Angola is D2, with D3 also assigned to Angola.

Old CR6xx calls became D2Axx, i.e. the old two-letter suffix was retained, but with the addition of the letter 'A' as the first letter of the suffix.

The transfer from CR6 callsigns to D2A callsigns was relatively quick, and appears to have been completed by the end of November, 1975.
