Following the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon in March 1978, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was established by the United Nations on 1978-03-19 following the adoption of Security Council Mandates 425 & 426. Its original mission was restore international peace and security, and help the Government of Lebanon restore its effective authority in the area. UNIFIL troop deployment began on 1978-03-23, by re-assigning personnel from UNEF (Egypt) and UNDOF (Syria).


The following countries have contributed to UNIFIL:


Armenia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Croatia, Cyprus, El Salvador, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Guatemala, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Malaysia, Nepal, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Serbia, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Turkey and United Republic of Tanzania.
