Opening of the Scottish Parliament and the National Assembly for Wales - 1999

In September, 1997 the 1997 Scottish Devolution Referendum was held. A majority of the Scottish electorate voted for a new devolved Scottish Parliament. The 1998 Scotland Act set out the powers of the devolved legislature. Following an election on  on 1999-05-06, power was transferred from Westminster to the new Parliament.


To celebrate this event, Scottish operators could use a special prefix in place of their normal prefix, from 1999-05-06 until 1999-07-31 (BST, GMT+1), as follows:


Normal prefix Special Prefix
GM 2S
MM 2A
2M 2T

In September, 1997 following a referendum, a narrow majority of the Welsh electorate voted for the creation of a National Assembly for Wales.

In 1998, the Government of Wales act was passed by the UK parliament, establishing the assembly.


To celebrate this event, Welsh operators could use a special prefix in place of their normal prefix, from 1999--05-06 until 1999-07-31 (BST, GMT+1), as follows:

GW 2C
MW 2X
2W 2Y
