History

Tromelin was a dependency of the British colony of Mauritius until the mid-1950s.

An airstrip and weather station were constructed on Tromelin in 1954 by France, following an agreement to do so with Britain.

Mauritius still claims sovereignty of the island, and signed a co-management treaty with France in 2010.

From 1960 until 2007 Les îles Eparses, which includes Tromelin, were administered by the prefecture of Réunion, under the authority of the Minister responsible for overseas territories. During that period Reunion callsigns were used, appended with /T. Since 2007-02-21, Les îles Eparses have been administered by TAAF, and the callsigns are now of the form FT#T.
